Welcome to AGLS

Welcome to the Association for General and Liberal Studies.  Now in its 49th year, the mission of AGLS is to serve college and university faculty and administrators who teach, lead, and manage programs of general education or liberal studies to improve their students’ learning and their own professional success.  The centerpiece of the Association’s work is its annual conference held each fall.  These friendly, collegial meetings provide sessions on pedagogy, curriculum, leadership, and assessment and other accreditation issues linked to general education.  The Association confers three awards for leadership and service in general education: The Jerry Gaff Faculty Award given annually based on nominations by peers, the Joseph Katz for Outstanding Leadership in General Education given every other year based on nominations made by the AGLS Executive Council, and The AGLS Exemplary Program Award awarded annually based on thematic criteria set each year by the Executive Council.  The Executive Council issues occasional position statements and publishes occasional commissioned papers on important topics in general and liberal studies.  We hope you will find AGLS to be a valuable source of information and ideas, and a valued source of supportive colleagues.

Stephen Bowen, President.

What is AGLS?

Established in 1961, AGLS, the Association for General and Liberal Studies, is a national forum for inquiry concerning the improvement of undergraduate education. The association seeks to enrich the educational experience of America's college and university students by stimulating vigorous discourse among professors, administrators, and all those concerned about the purpose, scope, and nature of general and liberal education. We believe liberal education provides the undergraduate with the breadth of knowledge, understanding, and appreciation needed to live in the world as informed, responsible, and responsive citizens.

If you have comments or suggestions, feel free to e-mail: Paul Ranieri, Executive Director of AGLS.
