Welcome to AGLS

Welcome to the Association for General and Liberal Studies.  Entering its 48th year, AGLS proudly asserts that its mission is, in part, to “serve colleges and universities by helping students and faculty enjoy the benefits of a liberal education attained through quality general education.”  AGLS will continue to provide an inviting forum for those wanting to participate in the dialogue about quality general and liberal education.

In 2008, AGLS looks forward to engaging in the growing national, and increasingly international, conversation about what constitutes the outcomes and evidence of effective general and liberal education.  This year, AGLS will co-sponsor its first international general education conference at the Darmstadt Conference Center at Technische Universität, Darmstadt, Germany.  The stateside September conference in Asheville will again offer workshops and sessions on a variety of general education issues and model practices, as well as offer a special opportunity to discuss the role of health issues in general and liberal education.

The website and listserv will increasingly offer members opportunities to share ideas and gain insight into quality general education and successful program models.  Last year’s AGLS Award winning processes are now on the site, as will be future winners’ applications.  Coming soon will be a series of “Invited Papers” which address more theoretical general education issues.  A new internet project designed to develop a discussion of general and liberal education definitions will also begin soon.  Other projects are in the works, and members will be invited to participate in all of them.

Please join AGLS members in our commitment to improving our students’ lives through the breadth of learning gained through general education, and feel free to contact me with any comments, questions, or suggestions.  I can be reached at mgress@vinu.edu

Michael Gress, President of AGLS

What is AGLS?

Established in 1961, AGLS, the Association for General and Liberal Studies, is a national forum for inquiry concerning the improvement of undergraduate education. The association seeks to enrich the educational experience of America's college and university students by stimulating vigorous discourse among professors, administrators, and all those concerned about the purpose, scope, and nature of general and liberal education. We believe liberal education provides the undergraduate with the breadth of knowledge, understanding, and appreciation needed to live in the world as informed, responsible, and responsive citizens.

If you have comments or suggestions, feel free to e-mail: Paul Ranieri, Executive Director of AGLS.
