To: Chancellors, Presidents, Provosts The Association of Deans and Directors of University Colleges and Undergraduate Studies has just published the enclosed report, "University Colleges and The Student-Centered University." We think that its contents will be of interest to you and your institution. Our hope is that this report will provide academic leaders with a better understanding of the learner-centered approach offered by these college and division units and supported by our organization. These colleges and divisions usefully transcend "turf" issues to promote students' exploration of disciplines, educational programs and the many academic possibilities within our universities and colleges. They also serve as valuable institutional windows into many activity and policy areas, often becoming effective and valued parts of the university student connection and support and retention efforts, curricular innovation, policy generation and reform, and university planning. The enclosed report will introduce you to these units and to some of the institutional-specific activities that are possible. The university college and undergraduate division approach is flexible enough to be adapted to many institutional situations. The Association is an organization of deans, directors, associates and assistants from colleges and divisions that often serve as the college of enrollment for "undeclared" majors and are responsible for academic advising and other programs focusing on the broad academic experiences of undergraduate students. The association invites your response and will be glad to be of assistance to you or your staff in answering questions or suggesting consultants. Please do not hesitate to contact us. |
