The history of PlayStation
2 is longer than some people would realize. In 1988 Sony teamed up with Nintendo to create a CD-ROM
attachment to the soon-to-be-released Super Nintendo. Because of licensing
problems, the "Super Disc" wasn't put out with Super Nintendo. Instead,
Play Station was created by Sony in 1991.
Play Station discontinued the use of the game carteradge that was
so popular with Nintendo and Super Nintendo, and instead went to a CD-ROM
based game style. Play Station came out in December of 1994 in Japan,
and in September of 1995 in the United States and Europe (How Stuff Works-PS2
History). PlayStation 2 was introduced in March of 2000 in Japan
and October of 2000 in the United States.
