Welcome to "MODERN AFRICA." In this course we will explore the arrival of the Europeans to Africa from the sixteenth century with a specific focus on the colonial conquest of the 1880s. Specifically, this course will look at different types of colonies established in Africa: colonies settled by white planters, those exploited for their mineral wealth as well as the "Cinderellas of the Empire," where the colonial impact was (by comparison) minimal. We will also cover the African reaction to colonial domination for African societies resisted the Europeans in different ways: responses ranged from primary and secondary resistance movements as well as cooperation. For many African colonies political independence was achieved in the 1960s, however, since this time much of modern Africa has been beset with problems. The failure of democracy, civil war, rapid population growth, famine, refugees and increasing indebtedness will be studied. Videos, novels, and other reading materials will be used to provide us with a deeper appreciation of recent African history. To meet these instructional goals this course utilizes a thematic approach in a lecture-video discussion and presentation format.
