This assignment is worth
60 points.

Please read the assignment and corresponding Assessment Form thoroughly, and clarify any questions before beginning this assignment.
Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to develop and/or enhance your ability to design effective overhead transparencies using PowerPoint and color ink jet printers.

Objectives: Given the information in the Transparency Assignment and Transparency Assessment Form you will:
  (1)

Use PowerPoint to develop a minimum of four (4) overhead transparencies capable of being used to support an identified lesson.

   (2)

Enhance the effectiveness of these transparencies by using the resources found in the Projected Media Recommendations and Course Resources.

   (3)

Develop a paper (describing the lesson's topic, purpose, objectives and the intended audience), content outline, and bibliography to communicate how the transparencies will be used and the research related to their preparation. Each one of these documents (i.e., paper, content outline, and bibliography) have a maximum length of one page.

   (4)

Use current APA format for all citations and bibliography listings.

   (5)

Actively exchange ideas and information with other students in-class.

All students should gain access to their free elementk account through Ball State University's Technology Training Support center located in the Library.  elementk gives you access to free tutorials on over 20 computer programs, including PowerPoint.  Base upon your understanding and skill in using PowerPoint, I would highly encourage you to examine and complete the appropriate (e.g., appropriate to your skill level) elementk PowerPoint training unit(s).  From the PowerPoint 2003 section consider the following:
1.  "Creating a Basic Presentation"
2.  "Delivering Presentations"
3.  "Modifying Presentations"
4.  "Working with Tables, Charts, and Diagrams"

Upon successful completion of each PowerPoint or other elementk Tutorial there is an assessment instrument.  Upon successful completion of this assessment a certificate is available.  Individuals often include these certificates in their portfolios or as evidence of advanced training.

To gain access to elementk simply perform the following:

      1. Go to elementk.com online and click on Student Enrollment.

Your
Task(s):
You are to use good principles of design and the Projected Media Recommendations to develop a minimum of four overhead transparencies to support a lesson related to an identified technological concept/principle.

During this activity you are to:
   (1)

Select a topic that is related to an identified technological concept or principle.

   (2)

Develop a one page paper to include:

    (a) The lesson's title or topic.  The lesson title or topic should be related to an identified technological concept or principle.
     (b) A statement of the lesson's purpose.
    (c) A description of the audience (e.g., age, grade level, course enrolled in, gender makeup, etc.) you will be presenting the lesson to.
    (d) Develop appropriate behavioral objective(s) for the lesson to be taught (e.g., cognitive, psychomotor, affective, and/or social).
      1. See Course Resources for information on developing goals and objectives.
http://www.bsu.edu/web/rlshackelfor/itedu/Resources.htm
    (e) Each one these items (title, purpose, audience description, and lesson objectives) should be listed under the appropriate heading (i.e., title, purpose, etc.).
  (3) Develop a content outline for the proposed lesson.  (maximum length one page).
  (4) Develop a one page reference sheet or bibliography of the resources used to develop your content outline and overhead transparencies.
    (a) Use current APA format for the Bibliography.
  (5) Use PowerPoint to develop color transparencies capable of supporting the identified lesson.  These overheads must include all of the elements/techniques identified in Task #6.

(Remember, the primary purpose of using overhead transparencies  is to facilitate/support learning.  Be sure the media and teaching strategies utilized are appropriate for the content to be delivered.)

    (a) Use proper visual design principals to develop your transparencies.  See Projected Media Recommendations:
http://www.bsu.edu/web/rlshackelfor/itedu/projectedmedia
recommendations.htm

Also see Course Resources for links to PowerPoint information and Tutorials.
  (6) Your PowerPoint overheads must included the following elements/techniques.  Naturally, additional techniques beyond these minimum criteria can be used to demonstrate the successful completion of the assignment's objectives.  Elements/techniques to be used in one or more of the four assigned transparencies include:
    (a) PowerPoint Clip Art.
    (b) Modified PowerPoint Clip Art (e.g., PowerPoint Clip Art that you modify by changing colors, rotating or flipping the image, deleting a portion of the image, etc.).

If you need assistance in performing this task, the following ideas or sources of information will help.

      1. In PowerPoint use the "Help" icon to give you access to Microsoft PowerPoint Help.  Then use the "Contents", " Answer Wizard", or " Index" to find information on topics such as "ungroup and modify clipart".

Note:   "You can also convert a Microsoft Windows Metafile into Microsoft PowerPoint drawing objects. After the image has been converted into drawing objects, you can add and delete objects and make other changes by using the tools on the Drawing toolbar."  This option can be found by progressing through the links, in Help, associated with the "ungroup and modify clipart" information.

      2. Also, see Course Resources for PowerPoint information and tutorials.
http://www.bsu.edu/web/rlshackelfor/itedu/Resources.htm
      3. Or use this portion of the Acadiau PowerPoint Tutorial to help you modify your PowerPoint Clipart.  The  purpose of the tutorial is to create an image as part of a master slide.  However, the same ungrouping and grouping techniques will not only let you delete portions of the clipart but will also let you change fill and line colors.

      (c) Pictures from the WWW (e.g., images or pictures copied from the WWW).

Be sure to give proper current APA citations for these images, pictures, or other slide resources in a small font under each image or in the lower right hand corner of the slide.

If you need assistance in performing this task, the following ideas or sources of information will help.

      1. Use the "Help" icon in Netscape to give you access to Nethelp - Netscape.  Then use the "Contents" or " Index" to find information on "saving images" or "saving a page".

Note: "To save an image from a page: (a) Right-click on the image (on Mac OS, press and hold the mouse button) to display a pop-up menu; and (b) Choose Save Image As", give the image a name, and save the image to your desktop or disk for later insertion.   Or, use copy and paste.
         2. The "Help" icon in Microsoft Internet Explorer can also be used to give you access to "Contents" or " Index" to find information on "saving pictures or text from a Web page.

Note: To save or copy an image from Internet Explorer  (on a PC) "
Right-click on the picture or image you want to save and then click Save Target As"Give the image a name and save the image to your desktop or disk for later insertion.
           3. Part Ten of this Acadiau Tutorial will also show you how to copy and insert Internet pictures.
http://aitt.acadiau.ca/tutorials/PowerPoint97/part10/index.htm

or
Examine the tutorials found in elementk.
http://www.elementk.com/

    (d) Scanned digital data/pictures.

If you need assistance in performing this task, the following idea or source of information will help.
         1. In PowerPoint use the "Help" icon to give you access to Microsoft PowerPoint Help.  Then use the "Contents", Answer Wizard, or Index to find information on topics such as "insert a picture".
    (e) Templates can be used but are not a requirement.  If a template is used consider using a template with limited or no background color.  This enhances visibility and use less ink that is required to print large quantities of background color.
  (7) Print copies of the overheads onto appropriate transparency film for your Ink Jet Printer.  Follow the instructions that came with the film.
  (8) Using the overhead transparencies, present your lesson to the identified audience.
  (9) Modify your overheads, as needed, based upon feedback received during the lesson.  Reprint the transparencies if needed.
  (10) Print two color copies of the handout pages (three per page) of your overhead transparencies.  One copy is to be element labeled (e.g., element labeled handout pages are labeled with the location of all required overhead elements/techniques labeled -- e.g., modified clipart, www pictures, scanned digital image/picture, etc.).  You are element to label one set of the handout pages by physically writing on them to show the location of the required element or technique.  Each element or technique needs to be labeled only once -- not each time it was used.

  (11)

Submit all materials for assessment by the assigned date.

  (12) If, after reading the Assignment and reviewing the Assessment Form, you have any questions about the assignment or the location of additional sources of information on PowerPoint, I encourage you to discuss these points or needs with others in the class.
