Profile:
Despite being most commonly associated with it's animated motion pictures,
the Walt Disney Corporation is also involved in many other forms of media
entertainment. In addition to Walt Disney Pictures, this company also
owns such picture studios as
Miramax and
Touchstone, this
is how the company can still compete with movies of all ratings while still
maintaining Disney's G-rated image. Disney is also active in the music
industry, owning
Hollywood Records
and
Lyric Street Records, in addition
to the record company of the
Disney name. The Walt
Disney Corporation also owns many television stations, including the
ABC network, the
Disney Channel,
ESPN,
Lifetime, and
A&E. As far as radio is concerned, Disney
owns radio stations in 24 major cities throughout the U.S., as well as the
ABC Radio Network.
This huge company also owns a few theme parks, including
Disney World,
Disneyland (CA),
Tokyo Disneyland (Site
in Japanese), and
Euro-Disney. In
addition to these things, Disney also owns their own
cruise line,
the
Disney Store, the
Anaheim Mighty Ducks, the
Anaheim
Angels, and several magazines, trade journals, and publishing companies.
Conglomeratization: We can see conglomeratization by looking
at Disney and seeing that it owns ABC. The smaller ABC
media company is active in both television and radio.
Globalization: Disney is very active
worldwide, owning theme parks in the U.S., Japan, and France.
Horizontal Integration: When looking
at the Disney company, we can tell there is horizontal integration by owning
multiple motion picture companies. Disney owns many of these companies
in an attempt to compete with all types of movies. The same is true
for the multiple record companies which Disney owns.
Vertical Integration: An example
of this is shown by Disney having their own movie production company as well
as owning
Disney Home Video.
Media Synergy: Disney is a prime
example of media synergy. They have their production company to make
movies, their record company to make the soundtrack, the ABC network to
advertise the movie, their store to sell merchandise of the movie (including
Disney Interactive CD-Roms), and then they can sell the movie on home video
or dvd. This is how one movie can millions upon millions of dollars
for the Disney company.
Financial Data:
Revenues: Disney's revenues for the year of 2002 was 25.3 billion
dollars.
Employees: Disney's last reported count of employees was 112,000
people.

Like nearly every other company in the United States, the events of Sept.
11th, 2001 had an effect on the Disney company. However, much like the AOL
Time Warner company, Disney has been able to remain a very profitable company.
Disney is currently the #2 media company in the world, behind AOL
Time Warner. Despite some loses over the past couple years, Disney
remains a very successful company and I believe will continue to be successful
for years to come.
