DEFINITION:
According to Dr. Gerhard
Digital Video Disc (DVD), is a family of optical discs that are the same overall dimensions of a CD, but have significantly higher capacity. It is currently the fastest growing technology of all time.
Techweb
DVD-type of disc that uses the same 120 mm diameter as a CD and looks like a CD, but has a significantly higher storage capacity. Whereas CDs are recorded on only one side, DVDs can be recorded on both sides. Some DVD versions support two layers per side that if both sides are recorded, can be provide more than 25 times the digital storage of a CD. DVD drives read most CD media as well.
Movie DVD or DVD video-is the movie format, which uses MPEG-3 compression to provide approximately two hours of LaserDisc-quality video per side.
How Stuff Works
DVD-The have a much larger data capacity, about 7 times more, that CD's. Most are able to store 133 minutes of high resolution video. A soundtrack in 5.1 channel Dolby Digital Surround Sound and subtitles in up to 32 languages.
DVD Players-They are extremely similar to CD players. It has a laser assembly that shines the laser beam onto the surface of the disc to read the pattern of bumps. Player decodes the MPEG-2 encoded movie turning it into a standard composite video signal and decodes the audio stream. To read the disc it must have working drive motor to spin the disc, a laser and lens system to focus on bumps and read them, and a tracking mechanism that can move the laser assembly so the laser beam can follow the spiral track
MARKET: DVDs and DVD players were created for and primarily used for home entertainment. There are however a number of benefits for specific people.
-Film scholars and movie fans are able to learn quite a bit about how movies are made and the story behind a particular movie's making. This include directors cuts, commentary tracks, deleted scenes, behind-the-scene footage, commercials and trailers, scripts and pictures, and documentary on the making of a movie and the people involved in the making.
-TV fans are now able to own entire seasons in single DVD boxsets, included shows currently on air, cable shows, and old shows off the air. Most also contain bonus material.
-Parents will likely prefer this to VHS for a number of reasons. DVDs do not ware out the way VHS tapes do, which is common since children frequently rewatch their favorite movies. Also parents are able to quickly rewind for children that want to see a particular part again, and fast-forward over scenes parents don't want their children to view. Many new DVD players also have parental controls.
-Collectors who wish to make a video library will likely prefer DVD since they are much smaller and easier to store then Videos. Also, boxsets include an entire series which is usually less expensive then buying each individually.
-Teachers and speakers will be able to use the scene select feature to show only the scene they wish to without the need to rewind and fast forward in front of their audience or in advance. They are also able to freeze the image and use slow motion while maintaining image quality.
-Foreign language teachers especially benefit from this development because they are able to play any popular movie in their language with subtitles to further help teach their students. Parents of foreign language students can do the same to further their child's education.

PRICES AND SALES:
DVD Video-Prices very greatly for a number of reasons, the first being the amount offered in one DVD set. A single DVD that offers little to no bonus features typically costs very little, around $10. DVDs that have number of features, especially if it is a two disc set, costs considerably more. S-ome of the most expensive discs to purchase are box sets which lumps a series together into one item. This can include movies with a number of sequels (Planet of the Apes, The Godfather) and but most common now is to have entire seasons of a television show (MASH, The Sopranos, The Simpsons). For the list of top DVD buys, go to Billboard.com.
DVD Players-Prices depend on a number of different features that a DVD player can have. Most DVD players have the ability play CDs and MP3s, to play music, and few also have the ability to play VHS videos, to take the place of a VCR. Others have the ability to store a number of discs, up to 5 or 6 DVDs at a time. Because of the portable size, portable DVD players are more expensive then standard size. According to Bussiness 2.0 last summer DVD players for the first time out sold VCRs with 35 million DVD players in the United States.
