The Tribune Company is one of the oldest companies in the United States. It was founded in 1847 in Chicago with the Chicago Tribune. The Company stayed just in the newspaper business and watched the Chicago Tribune grow as Chicago grew around it. WGN Radio was founded in 1924 and was one of the pioneer radio stations in the country. After a long selection process with many applicants submitting a multitude of designs to the Tribune, the Tribune Tower design was selected and built and is now a Chicago landmark. In the post-war boom of 1948, the Tribune Company founds two television stations: WGN in Chicago and WPIX in New York. The Tribune Company began to acquire newspapers in 1963 and continues to occasionally do that to this day. KWGN out of Denver is obtained in 1966 making it the third television station in the Tribune Company. In 1981 the Chicago Cubs were bought from the Wrigley Family and became a part of the Tribune Company. The Tribune Broadcasting division was also formed in that year. In 1982 the Tribune Entertainment division was officially formed and in 1983 the company was taken public. Throughout the 1980's Tribune acquired numerous television stations and newspapers across the country. Tribune made a smart investment into what at the time was a small company, America Online, in 1991. In 1997, Tribune bought Renaissance Communications and added six television stations to its growing roster. In 2000, Tribune acquired the Times-Mirror Company and added 8 newspapers to Tribune Publishing including The Los Angeles Times and Newsday. In 2002, the Company added WTTV, WB4, in Indianapolis to Tribune Broadcasting.
