Vanessa Leggett
On page 460 of Converging Media, there is a story about a journalist, Vanessa Leggett, who made history for being the longest jailed journalist. She was imprisoned for refusing to surrender sources of a murder case to the FBI. Her reasoning: She didn't want to reveal the confidentiality of her interviewiees.
She was loyal to her promise, but in the long run, her promise cost her freedom. She spent a total of 168 days in jail, but then released. Her trial is making its way to the Supreme Court. Many organizations are supporting her in her fight for poetic justice; one of those organizations, Newman's Own First Amendment, aided her with $25,000.
I agree with Leggett's principles. She promised her sources their names would not be revealed, and she didn't reveal them; not even to the FBI. She was not made out to be a liar and this really upholds her credibility. She holds my respect, and I hope to model her values as a future journalist. She stood up for herself and others, no matter the consequences.
