Iberomesornis
![]()
The fossil remains of Iberomesornis have been found
in lacustrine or lagoonal deposits
from the Lower Cretaceous located in Spain. The wing
span of Iberomesornis was
approximately 20 cm in length (about the size of a small
finch), and had a toothed beak.
It had a short tail with the development of a
pygostyle. Iberomesornis has an intermediate
phylogenetic position between Archaeopteryx
and
Ornithurae due to a combination
of primitive and derived characters (Sanz and Bonaparte
1992). Primitive characters
include the structure of the pelvis and hindlimb which is
similar to that of Archaeopteryx.
The derived characters common in modern birds include
feathers, coracoid,
furcula and
pygostyle. It is thought to be a true bird with the
capability of powered flight.
