We will be traveling leaving Wasilla the morning of the June 21, 2004 and will be staying at the Captain Bartlett Inn that evening. The morning of June 22, 2004 we will be heading north to Prudhoe Bay, weather permitting.

We have blocked 10 rooms at the rate will of $99.00 (plus 8% Bed Tax) per night for rooms with two double beds/ 2 guests. Each additional person in the room is $10.00. There is a link to the Captain Bartlett above. It shows an 800 number that can be used outside of Alaska, but I have not been able to get it to work.

Make your reservation by calling the Front Desk at 907-452-1888. Tell them that you are with the MTF/UCC (even if you are only doing the Haul Road Adventure) and that you want want of the rooms that are blocked. If they get stupid give them my name: Alan Leduc. Rooms will be released May 21, 2004, so make your reservation soon.

Dinner the night of June 21, 2004 will be at the The Musher's Roadhouse Restaurant which is housed on the hotel property and decorated in a style that pays tribute to Fairbanks ' favorite winter pastime, dog mushing. The restaurant features the finest steaks, Alaskan salmon or crab legs. The restaurant is also open for breakfast. For those that care to partake of  pre-Haul Road libations, you can visit the  famous Dog Sled Saloon, Home of the Big One(20 ounce bottled beer).

Karen says, I can vouch for the food and the good service - especially at the Saloon!  Be sure to check their website - the place is rustic-looking and everyone will get a kick out of the very "Alaskan" atmosphere. All services nearby, including 24-hour gas, fast food, laundromats, movie theater, shopping center and library. A big thanks to Karen for helping with the Fairbanks logistics.

Fairbanks Motorcycle Dealers

Thanks to Steve Matthews for providing the list of Fairbanks Motorcycle Dealers

Fairbanks Motor Sports (Honda, Victory) - talk to Dave Austin at the parts counter - 907-452-2050.  Located at 3419 South Cushman Street (one of the main drags in town, anyone can tell you how to get there).  Toll free in-state is 800-764-2050. Open on Mondays and none have a problem with you bringing in your own tires! They charge at $75.00/hour for the time taken for the change.

Alaska Fun Center (Kawasaki, Yamaha, Indian): Owner Bill Larry has been in the business forever.  He and his wife, Gaby, are hands-on owners and riders, and by the way are really great people.  We bought our Midnight Star from them - they handled the "recall" with class and we REALLY appreciate them!  Local phone is 907-452-3455; in-state toll free is 800-478-3455.  They're located at 1817 College Road (corner of College Road and Aurora Drive). Open on Mondays and none have a problem with you bringing in your own tires! $25.00 each for spoke rims, $35.00 each for cast rims.  If you bring in your own tires they charge an additional $20.00 each for balance.

Northern Power Sports (Suzuki, Yamaha, Arctic Cat) is the largest non-Harley dealer in town.  They do it all!  Talk with Colby or Craig Hill; sometimes their newer folks are not as knowledgable!  Local phone is 907-452-2762; in-state toll free is 800-478-1967.  They're at 1980 Van Horn Road (right down the street from where we work, yell if you need directions!). Open on Mondays and none have a problem with you bringing in your own tires! $35.00 per wheel including balance.

BMW Motorcycle Sales - owned by George Rahn, who's been around since about 1800 - works out of a shop attached to his house and is an INCREDIBLE mechanic.  Local phone 907-479-2367.  He's located on the left at the very end of Westwood Way off College Road.  Sorry, no street address (just the way things are in Fairbanks, a lot).

Harley-Davidson Farthest North Outpost has been around forever.  They're great folks and just built a new dealership/shop last summer.  They used to be in this tiny building on Gaffney - now they're just off Airport Road near Fred Meyer West.  They usually have everything anyone needs for fixups or add-ons to the Harleys in town.  If not, they can usually get what's needed inside of 2 days.  Local phone 907-456-3265; in-state toll free is 800-656-3265.  Their address is 1450 Karen Way - NOT named after my spouse (altho it should be!)  It's actually on an access road off Airport Way, another main drag in town. Open on Mondays and none have a problem with you bringing in your own tires! $35.00 per wheel, I forgot to ask about balancing.

D&D Custom Cycles - these guys mostly custom build and modify bikes, but have quick access to a lot of after-market products and will help anyone in need of whatever!  No toll-free, but local number is 907-456-6650.  They're at 3536 Industrial Avenue (a block behind Northern Power Sports).

Artic Tire -  Not a bike dealer but one of the local tire shops. Has a pneumatic motorcycle tire changer and charges $20.00 per wheel static balance included.   (Seems the best bet!!!)  Phone 1-907-456-8622, Rob.  Also needs a two week notice.

These are the ones most of us need - there's a lot of other "specialists" in town!  Fairbanks is probably, per capita, one of the biggest biker towns in the US.  Anyone riding an "off band" (including Urals!) will find folks who know all about the brand.  Just ask anyone at the shops listed above - they'll probably have the phone numbers and directions as well.

Rules of the Road

Provided by Steve Matthews

Today a co-worker of mine mentioned the ride to one of the Security people for the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company that he knows and was given the following info:

Unwritten Rules of the Haul Road.

All large trucks have the right-of-way!  Slow down when meeting these guys, about 25 to 30 MPH is best or whatever the conditions dictate.  If a rig comes up behinf you let them pass.  Be courteous, these guys are clannish and communicate with each other all the time with VHF radios.  If you cut someone off or crowd them the next truck might do something rash,  It has been known to happen.  (Motorhomes loosing windshields, etc.)

Help those in need.  If you see someone in trouble stop and give a hand or offer to relay a message (see above). In the eyes and minds of those that work and live on this road there is no excuse for not stopping.

Lights on and visible at ALL Times!! (Keep 'em clean!)  You all know that bikes are hard o see to begin with but when the dust is boiling or the rain is masking the road you NEED to be seen.   (A lot of the road surface is grey and on a cloudy day it blends right into the horizon and so will you when your covered in mud.   If it is clear out you have to remember that the sun is very low on the horizon at ALL times once you cross the Arctic Circle and can mask you from others view )
