General Guidelines

In general we will travel first in Canada as 24 hour gas is more readily available in the U.S. This means for the Lake Superior ride, we will be traveling counterclockwise.
Remember that you will have two border crossings. A Passport will generally make things easier. Without a Passport you will generally need a drivers license and certified birth certificate. We obviously aren't the connected to either the Canadian or U.S. Government so your experience could be anything from a few questions to a complete search. Be courteous.
You should check with your insurance company regarding coverage in Canada. Often they will issue a special insurance card.
The Lake Huron Route is 1003.9 miles as defined in the directions below. Do you have to follow this exact route? No, but you are must do at least 1000 miles and you must make the mandatory checkpoints which will be used to validate your odometer. This route is so close to 1000 miles, we highly recommend that you follow the route exactly. We will use Microsoft Streets and Trips to validate that you have in fact done 1000 miles. If you take a short cut, you need to clearly document it and recognize it could put you under 1000 miles and invalidate your ride.
This route has three MANDATORY GAS STOPS. These stops mark the corners of this route We will use these stops as an odometer check.
- Thunder Bay Shell, 888 Red River Road, Thunder Bay, Ontario
- Duluth Super America, 2432 London Road, Duluth, Minnesota
The scheduled time to leave the Best Western is 6:00 a.m-7:00 a.m. Alan Leduc or Don Braziel will be available during that time to sign you out. However, you can leave anytime you wish.
- There will be a register in the lobby if you want to leave early. Make sure that you sign out before you leave. You will need to record your odometer reading and time out.
- If you want to leave after 7:00 a.m., make sure you advise Alan or Don the night before so that we know you are starting late and don't start hunting you down.
When you return, if Alan and Don are not in the lobby, make sure that you sign-in on the register that will be in the lobby. Otherwise, we will be calling your emergency contact wondering where you are.
You will be provided envelopes for your your receipts and riders log each day. You are to turn in your witness forms (complete except for witness information and Stop Log daily. There will be a locked drop box in the lobby in the event that you cannot find Alan or Don.
Emergency numbers will be provided to you before the ride. They will also be listed on the register in the lobby. If you must abandon the ride for any reason, be sure to call the emergency numbers. Failure to do so could cause you to be banned from future MTF Events and since we are in close affiliation with the LD Community, other LD Events.

Note from Critter In Duluth,MN going south on I-35, 53 North is closed for it's second year of construction. All signage saying 53 north has been removed. You can take this exit though, it is marked 20th Ave and that's where it ends. I think you might what to exit I-535 East from I-35 south to limit confusion. It is a left lane exit. Note from Mike Senty: From MN State Hwy 61 in Duluth heading south from Two Harbors, take a left onto I-35 south at the second set of lights after entering Duluth. There is a Holiday gas station on the right side of the intersection, heading south. I-35 is a divided four lane highway. Follow I-35 until you see the Hwy 53 south exit. This is also signed for "to Wisconsin". It's a left lane exit. Follow Hwy 53 south across the high bridge and over the harbor. Once you cross the high bridge, take the first exit to the right, following Hwy 53. Don't go straight. Follow the cloverleaf exit all the way back under the bridge, following the Hwy 53 signs to the right. AFTER going under the bridge, there will be a stop sign. Take a left at the stop sign. You will still be on Hwy 53 south. Hwy 2 east will merge with Hwy 53 south as you ride through Superior. Follow Hwy 2 and Hwy 53 through Superior, WI
