Virginia Ball Center for Creative Inquiry students once again raise the bar for academic excellence.

Thursday, June 4th 2009, the VBC student produced film, State of Assault received not one, but three EMMY® nominations from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). Fall 2008 VBC student Cameron Kinzer from the State of Assault seminar attended the Indianapolis nomination party and was on hand alongside reporters and anchors from the Lower Great Lakes Chapter affiliated TV stations as WTHR News Anchor Scott Swan read the nominations:

Category 45 - Public/Current/Community Affairs
Category 57 - Crafts: Musical Composition/Arrangement
Category 64 - Crafts: Editor - Non-News

The Category 45 award is given for excellence in a program or special that focuses on current issues of societal concerns, social ills, community or general public interest. Craft Category awards are given for excellence in a specific craft discipline demonstrating the skills of one or more individuals.

The Film Description: Each day, the backlog of forensic evidence from sexual assault cases continues to grow. Additionally, numerous communication problems exist among law enforcement officials, forensic nurses, victim advocates, and judiciary officials during laboratory and criminal proceedings. State of Assault takes a victim-centered perspective in examining the sexual assault casework process.

The NATAS and the EMMY® Award: The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences was founded in 1955. It is dedicated to the advancement of the arts and sciences of television and the promotion of creative leadership for artistic, educational and technical achievements within the television industry. The Lower Great Lakes Chapter of the NATAS has a mission to serve its members, recognize excellence and promote the highest standards in television professionalism. The Emmy® Award is an international award that recognizes excellence in the television industry. This is the highest award given in television.

The Ceremony: The 40th Annual EMMY® Awards Ceremony will be held Saturday, September 12, 2009 at the Cleveland Intercontinental Hotel.
