Careers in Urban Design
Urban designers engage in the growing challenges of designing cities in this urban century.  They work in interdisciplinary teams to shape the public environment and how buildings, public spaces, streets and transport systems look, function and relate to one another.  Urban designers balance aesthetics, sociological and cultural aspects of a community, function, economics and efficiency to promote sustainable developments, neighborhoods, cities and regions.

Examples of projects an urban designer may work on include: visioning of urban environments; master planning of multi-building, complex projects; large land development plans; urban redevelopments; streetscapes; subdivisions; and new towns.

Graduates will find employment in both the public and private sectors.  Public employment opportunities will most likely be located in large urban centers working for state or municipal agencies with large urban developments.  Private sector employment opportunities include firms that offer master planning, urban infrastructure, urban redevelopment and civic building and public space design services.  Many of these firms engage in design activities to help communities or large organizations such as universities, hospitals, or airports develop and prosper.
