The professional planner helps communities cope with growth, change and renewal in ways that will maintain and improve the community's quality of life.  The planning process assists a community by identifying its problems and its central values, by formulating goals and alternative approaches to achieving community objectives, and by enabling desired consequences of change.

Requirements of the minor include one introductory course, 9 hours from a choice of 5 core courses, and an additional 9 hours from approved Urban Planning electives.  The minor course of study must be approved by the planning department advisor
