Kiln
Vance Bell and Ted Neal (back), assistant professors of art, stoke up the fires of their train kiln and keep a watchful eye on the temperature gauge. The professors and students dutifully tended the kiln, which had to be constantly monitored for 24 hours to ensure the temperature hovered around 2,400 degrees. Through this process, pottery gains color from flame, volatile materials and fly ash rather than traditional glaze.
