Update
Former Bearcat, Jayhawk to share memories of losing (2/6/2004)

Philip Raisor
Philip Raisor

A player on the losing side in two of the most storied basketball games ever played shares his experiences Feb. 18 at Bracken Library.

Philip Raisor, associate professor of English at Old Dominion University and author of   "Outside Shooter: A Memoir," speaks at 7:30 p.m. in room 225 of the library. The free public program is sponsored by the Friends of the A.M. Bracken Library.

Raisor started as guard for the Muncie Central Bearcats who fell in the 1954 Indiana state final to tiny Milan, the David-over-Goliath event that inspired the movie, "Hoosiers."

He received a basketball scholarship to the University of Kansas where his Jayhawks squad, led by Wilt Chamberlain, lost the 1957 NCAA championship to North Carolina in triple overtime.

Raisor's memoir recounts the hard knocks and hard-won triumphs of a basketball odyssey across 1950s America from Indiana to Kansas to Louisiana. This was an era in which a racially divided society was taking halting steps toward integration and few places held more tension than the sports arena.

Books will be available for purchase and signing.
