Tutor Training
The Learning Center has made a commitment to work towards becoming certified by the CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association).  This is an international association that certifies tutor-training programs and is endorsed by the National Association for Developmental Education and American College Personnel Association.

The purpose of the certification is to allow tutors to receive recognition and positive reinforcement for their successful work from an international organization.   The certification helps set up a standard for the minimum skills and training a tutor needs to be successful.  It also ensures on-going training through the tutoring experience.  Upon completion of a level, the tutor will receive a certificate and the authorization to include this accomplishment on a resume.

The certification will occur at three different levels.

Level One:  Regular Tutor

Level Two:  Advanced Tutor

Level Three:  Master Tutor

Each level requires 10 hours of various forms of training and 25 hours of tutoring experience.  These online tutor-training modules will count toward the tutor's 10 hours of training for a level.  For Level One training, tutors should work through Modules 1-8.  During Level Two training, tutors should work through Modules 9-12.  During Level Three training, tutors should work through Modules 13-16.  The topics of the modules were selected from a list of tutor skills in the CRLA requirements.

Tutors should work through the modules in order and should only complete those modules required for their training level  (e.g. If a tutor is in Level One training, he/she should not work on modules for Levels Two or Three).

A tutor will only be allowed to complete one level of training per semester.

At the end of each module is a quiz about the contents of the module.  When a tutor is ready to take the quiz, he/she should select the correct desk area (Study Skills/Writing, Math, Core Curriculum).  This will link the tutor to the quiz.  After completing the quiz, the tutor should select "submit" and the results will be sent to the correct coordinator.  The coordinator will then contact the tutor if modules need to be repeated.

The coordinators hope the training modules will increase your skills as a tutor and prepare you for your tutoring experiences.  The better prepared tutors in the Learning Center are, the better service they will provide to their peers at Ball State.  If there is a question or concern about the modules, please contact the coordinator of your desk.
