Module 15

Training and Supervising Other Tutors

Objectives

  • The tutor will analyze the training levels and give rationale for each mode and topic.
  • The tutor will present his/her own philosophy of what should be involved in the training of a tutor.
  • The tutor will offer suggestions on what makes a good tutor.
Module 15 is designed to be reflective in understanding the rational behind the training process of the tutors in the Learning Center.  There is not much reading involved with this module other than reviewing over the training components of Levels One, Two and Three.  The training requirements are similar at all desks.  Emphasis in this module is being placed on your responses to the questions at the end of the module.

Level One Training Requirements

  • Orientation Meeting with Coordinator.  Read the Math Tutor Handbook.  Sign the Attendance/Conduct Policy and return to the coordinator. (30 minutes)
  • Complete the Personal Profile and return to the Coordinator.
  • Visit the Tutor Training Modules online at http://www.bsu.edu/web/learningcenter/ and work through Modules 1-8.  Take the quiz after each module.  These quizzes will automatically be e-mailed to the Coordinator. (two hours)
  • Introductory discussion with a GA on duty during your scheduled hours about expectations, competencies, handbook, and procedures.  (30 minutes)

  • Meeting and introducing yourself with fellow tutors during your scheduled hours. Complete two colleague data forms.
  • Observe at least one tutoring session and complete the "Tutor Observation Reflection" worksheet.  A discussion with the tutor should occur after your observation about the session. Turn in your observation sheet to the Coordinator. (one hour, 30 minutes)
  • Select three case studies in packet and answer question about the cases.  Select a time to discuss case with a GA on duty or with the Coordinator. (one hour, 30 minutes)
  • Watch the Tutor Training Video Modules 1-3 and complete the study guide. (one hour)
  • Attend at least one Learning Center in-service and turn in the reflection sheet to the Coordinator.  (one hour)  The meeting at the beginning of each semester to distribute work schedules is not considered an in-service session.
  • Personal experience discussion about your tutoring experience with the Coordinator after first session. Complete self-evaluation form and bring to the discussion meeting. (one hour)
  • Arrange for a GA to conduct a formal evaluation of one of your tutoring sessions.  Discuss the session with the GA and turn in their observation sheet to the Coordinator. (one hour)
  • Complete 25 hours of tutoring.  Always be sure to record your information in the logbook at the desk about your tutoring sessions.   The coordinator will notify you when 25 hours have been complete, and you will move on to Level Two.

Level Two Requirements

  • Orientation meeting and read the Math Tutor Handbook.  Sign the Attendance/Conduct Policy and return to Graduate Assistant. (Beginning of year)
  • Complete the Personal Profile and return to the Coordinator. (Beginning of year)
  • Meeting and introducing yourself with your fellow tutors during your scheduled hours. Complete colleague data form. (Two per semester)
  • Observe at least one tutoring session in the math area and complete the "Tutor Observation Reflection" worksheet.  A discussion with the tutor should occur after your observation about the session. (one hour)
  • Have a peer tutor observe a tutoring session conducted by you.  Your peer will complete the "Tutor Observation Reflection" worksheet and discuss his/her observations after the session. (30 minutes)
  • Arrange for a GA to conduct a formal evaluation of one of your tutoring sessions.  After the session, a discussion should occur about the session.  Turn in the evaluation to the Coordinator (30 minutes)
  • Complete the Tutor Self-Evaluation and have discussion with the Coordinator about job performance. (one hour)
  • Watch the Tutor Training Video Modules 4-6 and complete the study guide. (two hours)
  • Visit the Tutor Training Modules online at http://www.bsu.edu/web/learningcenter/ and work through Modules 9-12.  Take the quiz after each module.  These quizzes will automatically be e-mailed to the Coordinator. (one hour)
  • Observe one tutoring session in one of the other areas (Core Curriculum, Writing, or Study Strategies) and complete the "Tutor Observation Reflection" worksheet.  Discuss the session with the tutor after the session.  Turn in the worksheet to the Coordinator. (one hour)
  • Attend two Learning Center in-services.  Fill out the reflection sheets distributed at the in-service and turn them in to the coordinator.  The beginning meeting where schedules are given does not count as an in-service. (two hours)
  • Complete two of the case studies included in the packet.  Discuss the cases with the Coordinator or GA. (one hour)
  • Complete 25 hours of tutoring.  The coordinator will notify you when 25 hours have been completed, and you will move on to Level Three.

Level Three Requirements

  • Orientation Meeting and read the Math Tutor Handbook.  Sign the Attendance/Conduct Policy and return to Graduate Assistant. (Beginning of year)
  • Complete the Personal Profile and return to the Coordinator. (Beginning of year)
  • Meeting and introducing yourself with your fellow tutors during your scheduled hours. Complete colleague data form. (Two per semester)

Items of Training to Complete Level Three

  • Watch the Tutor Training Video Modules 7-8 and complete the study guide. (one hour)
  • Visit the Tutor Training Modules online at http://www.bsu.edu/web/learningcenter/ and work through Modules 13-16.  Take the quiz after each module.  These quizzes will automatically be e-mailed to the Coordinator. (one hour)
  • Attend two Learning Center in-services. Fill out the reflection sheets distributed at the in-service and turn them in to the Coordinator. (two hours)
  • Arrange for the coordinator to conduct a formal evaluation of two of your tutoring sessions.  Fill out a self-evaluation sheet for each session and arrange to meet with the coordinator to discuss job performance. (two hours)
  • Complete 25 hours of tutoring.  The coordinator will notify you when 25 hours have been completed.

Choose options from the following list to complete.  A total of four hours of training need to be completed by combining the different options listed.

  • Arrange to meet with a faculty member in your area of tutoring.  Visit him/her during office hours and discuss ways in which you can better assist that professor's students. Complete a one-page reflection about the discussion. (one hour)
  • Arrange a meeting with a college administrator (dean, vice-president, president).  Visit him/her and discuss the importance of tutoring and the Learning Center services and how it fits into Ball State's educational system. Complete a one-page reflection about the discussion.  (one hour)
  • Organize and present an in-service for the Learning Center tutors or just the Math Desk tutors on a topic related to tutor training.  The topic needs to be approved by the coordinator.  Research using current literature from professional journals and/or other resources should be used.  (four hours)
  • Create an online training module that would be placed online for future tutors to use during their training.  The Coordinator must approve the topic of the module. (four hours)
  • Attend a conference and/or workshop concerning topics related to tutor training.  The conference or workshop needs to be approved by the Coordinator.  (four hours)
  • Create four case study situations about scenarios you have encountered during your tutoring sessions.  Write out the case and pose questions for the reader to contemplate. (two hours)
  • Observe a math tutor session and a session in one of the other areas (Core Curriculum, Writing, or Study Strategies) and write a reflection comparing/contrasting the sessions. (two hours)
  • Work with Student Volunteer Services to tutor younger children outside of the Learning Center.  Write how this tutoring is similar/different than your tutoring experiences in the Learning Center. (two hours)
  • Serve as a mentor tutor for a beginning tutor. (time subject to activity)
  • If you have an idea to satisfy some and/or all of these four training hours, discuss your idea with the Coordinator to gain approval.
