Overview
Ball State University Computing Services offers wireless network access in all of the major academic and administrative buildings on campus. Wireless also radiates from the common areas in the residence halls and is available in all residence hall rooms. This wireless connectivity will allow flexibility for accessing the Internet and other applications.
It is important to note that Ball State's wireless network is a wireless local area network that operates at Ball State's campus in Muncie. The wireless network does not work outside the main campus. Ball State's wireless network does not function as an internet service provider for off campus student housing.
Hardware and Software Requirements
To access the wireless network, a computer needs to be equipped with a wireless network card. Most newer laptops will come with a built-in wireless card. If yours does not have a built-in card, an external wireless card will be needed. An external card can purchased from a local computer store or from the Ball State Computer Showcase Center, located in RB 134b. The important thing is to make sure that the card is 802.11g or 802.11b compatible. Both Cisco and Linksys cards work well at Ball State.
Software Setup
Your laptop should auto-detect the Ball State wireless network. You may be prompted to specify a SSID (common network name for the devices in the wireless LAN). You will need to enter: bsu (in lower case).
Authorization for Students and University Employees
When accessing Ball State's wireless network, you will be required to open up a web browser and type in your Ball State username/password to get network access. This username and password are the same as those you use to access other web resources, such as Outlook webmail.
Access for Campus Visitors
