Frequently Asked Questions
Publishing Web Pages
General Information

The  BSU iWeb server is available for all Ball State students, faculty, and staff to publish personal, departmental, course and organizational web pages.

While one can use a traditional FTP program to upload files to the web server, this account can also updated by using a standard Netscape or Internet Explorer browser and also web development applications like Microsoft FrontPage and Macromedia Dreamweaver. This makes publishing files to the web server account simple, quick and relatively easy even for a novice web user.

In order to publish to the web server, you will need a valid BSU Computer Username and Password, which is the same as your BSU Username and Password. If you do not have a BSU Computer Account, or if you have forgotten your password, you will need to bring your BSU identification card to the Information Desk located in RB 165.

Step 1: Setting up Your Web Server Account

The first step to publishing your web page is to create an account on the web server.  Do this by following the steps below:

  1. Use Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator or Netscape Communicator
  2. Click on iWeb link http://iweb.bsu.edu
  3. Read the information on the page.
  4. Click on Support link or "Support Console" to continue.
  5. Enter your BSU computer username and password in the "Enter Network Password" dialog box.
  6. Agree to Terms
  7. If you plan to use Frontpage, click on Enable Frontpage Server Extensions
  8. Click on Create iWeb Site.
NOTE: You will have to wait for few minutes while iWeb creates your Web sites.  Do not hit any key during this time.

For an example visit: Creating an iWeb Account

After a few seconds your account will be created. A web page that contains the URL of your web site as well as the address used to FTP files to your account will be displayed. Print out this information for future reference.

Step 2:  Create  Your Web Page

Web pages can be created using many different programs including Netscape Composer, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Microsoft FrontPage and/or Notepad, among others.   Professors will normally tell students how they want them to create their web pages.   Whatever program you choose, make sure that you name your main web page (the page that you want to load first), default.htm

Step 3:  Publishing Your Web Page - for Windows Users

There are several ways to publish your page, depending on what program you use to develop it.  The host name to use is BSUusername.iweb.bsu.edu where BSUusername is your BSU Computer username.  For example, if your Computer Username is joestudent, the host to publish to is joestudent.iweb.bsu.edu
