Externally Sponsored Programs
The Office of Academic Research and Sponsored Programs (OARSP) is responsible for assisting faculty in all matters related to grant proposals.  Extensive information on funding sources is available in the form of printed materials, online at www.bsu.edu/research. The primary path for this access to funding opportunities is the Community of Science (COS), found under External Funding-Sources or at www.cos.com.  All faculty members are encouraged to register their expertise profiles on COS and with the Eureka! Database ( hlmiller@bsu.edu).  All aspects of proposal development – concept development, editing assistance, budget, and university clearances are managed through OARSP.

Provost's Initiative for Major Grant Development
This program emphasizes efforts to secure major external funding to strengthen or develop research, service or teaching initiatives that have a broader impact upon the institution than do proposals focused upon the work of a single investigator.  Focus of these programs may include the priorities of the investigator's department, college, or the entire university. Initiative funds will support an individual for brief periods for preparatory work done toward the development of a major proposal.  Most awards are for summer support but funding may be provided at other times in order to take advantage of funding opportunities as they develop.

Enhanced Provost Initiative (EPI)
By virtue of its recent successes in securing external funding, it is clear that grantsmanship ought to be applied to help build existing strengths and emphases at Ball State; therefore, EPI is an approach to build upon existing programs.  Analogous to the Provost Initiative, proposals are sought to build existing programs that have the following characteristics.

  1. The proposed project will enable the development of programs of major importance, as reflected in priorities in the evolving Strategic Plan, or relating to major societal or educational problems or issues (40%).
  2. Substantial capabilities in facilities, talent and experience are in place (40%).
  3. The proposal project is relatively broad, containing interdisciplinary aspects (20%).
  4. The proposed project has the potential to meet its annual budget by securing external grants. (Y/N).
