The Office of Academic Research and Sponsored Programs (OARSP) is responsible for pre-award research administration at Ball State University. The office activities support research, scholarship, and creative activities of faculty, staff, and students. Office activities are clustered within six areas: Funding Information Services; Proposal Preparation including narrative development, budget development, cost sharing requirements, clearance and submission; Research Compliance; Technology Transfer; Internal Grants; Research Recognition and Dissemination; and Research Contacts and Policy Issues.
OARSP helps Ball State faculty and students locate external funding sources for support of research or creative activities. In addition, the Internal Grants Program provide seed funds to spur the development of externally funded projects.
One of the major resources the office provides is a Website (http://www.bsu.edu/research) that allows the researcher easy access to information. The external funding portion of the site contains links to a variety of databases which list external funding opportunities. The internal funding section of the site provides guidelines that describe the specifics of the internal grant programs and provides application forms.
External Funding Opportunities
Extensive information on funding sources is available in OARSP through the following electronic sources:
A. http://www.bsu.edu/research/secure/externalfundopp/
B. COS -Community of Science
COS provides Ball State University with access to services that help you find funding in all the academic disciplines, publicize your research online, and locate potential collaborators.
The most comprehensive database of funding opportunities that contain up-to-date grants, awards, fellowships, and other funding opportunities.
C. EUREKA!
EUREKA! organizes research interests and expertise into a database and links this information to funding opportunities. The result is a personalized listing of funding opportunities, whereas EUREKA! alerts subscribers to those grants whose deadlines are approaching. The EUREKA! notification is drawn from the comprehensive listing of the national Grants Resource Center and is not exclusive to new or modified funding possibilities.
D. Newsletter
Monthly on-line publication providing the latest news in funding opportunities.

The term technology transfer refers to the interaction between universities and the private sector to bring innovative solutions or new work to the public. Technology transfer typically involves the commercialization of intellectual property (patents and copyrights) that has been developed by faculty, staff, or students with university resources or as a part of employment responsibilities. Ball State University is committed to supporting the development of copyrightable or patentable works that result from the academic, creative, or research activities of faculty, professional personnel, and students. The University Patent and Copyright Policies (found in the Faculty and Professional Personnel Handbook) explain the rights and responsibilities of BSU authors and inventors. The Policies are designed to enable the transfer of technology to the public and the return of royalty income to authors and inventors.

Ball State University's Internal Grants Program was created in 1965 to provide funding to faculty and students and to support the development of projects in the areas of research and creative endeavors. Internal Grants are intended to supplement and strengthen the support for research and creative endeavors that comes both from department and college resources and other university programs.
New faculty members are defined as faculty within their first or second year of receiving a new appointment. New faculty are
eligible for all Internal Grants programs and are not limited to submitting proposals only to new faculty competitions. However, the new faculty competition offers certain advantages, namely, that the competition pool is smaller than the general faculty pool and that review emphasis is on the potential and promise of the project rather than past productivity. Ball State's Internal Grants program for faculty include: Research, Creative Arts, Intellectual Property, Provost Initiative, Enhanced Provost Initiative, Ad Hoc, Reprint/Publication Support, and Travel Support for External Funding Opportunities. In addition, the faculty mentored Graduate & Undergraduate Student opportunities include: Research, Creative Arts, and travel support for presentation at professional meetings.

Because OARSP works with faculty in many different academic fields and disciplines, it is a great place to begin a search for a potential collaborator on a project.
