The mission of the Office of Recreation Services is to provide safe and quality program services and facilities to support the recreational, academic, and athletic needs of the university community.
Intramural Sports
The Intramural Sports Program at Ball State is one that offers over 40 different championships in over 25 different events. The program offers league and tournament opportunities on individual, dual and team levels, and incorporates a variety of leagues that include men's, women's, co-rec, and wheelchair divisions.
BSU-FIT Group Exercise Program
The BSU-FIT aerobics program offers over 20 sessions per week in a variety of different workouts. Classes offered include step, Chaos, Pilates, cycling, and other group exercise programs designed to challenge the physically fit or beginners looking to get in shape.
What is Indoor Cycling?
Know also as "spinning", indoor cycling is a group exercise class offered on several stationary bikes. A "leader" will take class participants through a variety of "courses" while stationed on the bike.

The range of passes offered include, two-session options to semester unlimited passes. Sessions are scheduled in the mornings, noon, afternoon, and evenings and are offered at both Irving and Ball Gyms.
Non-Credit Instructional Recreation Classes
A variety of classes are offered each semester to both the BSU and Muncie communities at very affordable rates. The design of these introductory and some intermediate classes is to provide an opportunity to experience an activity that one may have an interest in. Classes are offered in many different program areas including yoga, pilates, golf, and dance. Contact us for a semester listing of classes offered.
Sport Clubs
Ball State supports over 25 sports clubs. They are open to novice and experienced participants in competitive, instructional, and recreational environments. A list of all active sports and contact names from each club are accessible on our website @ www.bsu.edu/recreation.
Youth Programs
A summer recreation day camp, known as "Cardinal Kids Camp", is open to children that will be in grades K-8 starting in the fall. Housed in Ball Gym, this camp consists of nine weekly sessions (summer 2007) with activities ranging from campus field trips, games, arts and crafts, and daily swimming. Registration usually commences around the first in mid/late April for the following summer sessions.
Aquatic Programs
The "Learn-to-Swim" program offers four levels of instruction to children and adults. Located at Ball Pool, these lessons take place on some Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings during the fall and spring semesters. "Family Swim" is a free, unstructured program offered on Friday nights from 5:30-7:30 pm for the families of the Ball State community.
Several recreation facilities exist on-campus that provide opportunities for racquetball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, jogging, group fitness, swimming, weight training, and many others.
Irving Gym Complex
This recreation facility consists of a 6,000 sq. ft fitness room with selectorized and free weights, cardiovascular machines including elliptical machines and treadmills, and televisions. Other areas within the complex consist of 8 basketball courts, 14 volleyball courts, 10 racquetball courts, 3 dance studios, locker rooms, an indoor 200-meter track, and an outside basketball goal (east of the Field Sports Building).
Lewellen Aquatic Center
This aquatic venue is home to the varsity swim team and features a six lane, 25-yard pool and a diving well with one-meter boards.
Ball Gymnasium
Ball Gymnasium was renovated in 1997 and consists of a fitness room, suspended track, gym floor, locker rooms, dance studios, and lap swimming pool.
Outdoor Facilities
Many outdoor fields and venues exist on-campus to accommodate activities such as tennis, softball, soccer, flag football, and running.
Participation in the activities offered by Recreation Services or the use of the recreation facilities and services requires eligible patrons to have either a valid BSU ID or Rec Card. Applications to obtain a Rec Card are available in the Office of Recreation Services, Irving Gym 201. Listed below is a description of those individuals who are eligible to utilize Ball State recreation programs and services on a non-fee or fee basis.
Faculty/Professional Personnel: The following groups of faculty/professional personnel are entitled to use the recreation facilities under the no fee policy:
- All regular and contract full-time Faculty or Professional Staff as described in Groups 1-10 of the Ball State Benefits Handbook.
- Contract faculty with the designation of Distinguished Professor or occupying endowed chairs for at least one academic semester but less than one academic year.
Staff/Service Personnel: All regular full-time Staff and Service Personnel assigned on a fiscal year, 12- or 9-month basis with benefits, are eligible to use the facilities and programs under the no-fee policy. All other service/staff (contract faculty, student supervisors, religious advisors, academic interns, affiliates, adjuncts and temporary staff) may purchase a Rec Card for $75 per year. Spouses and Dependents: Spouses and dependents of BSU personnel who receive complimentary services are eligible for privileges under the no-fee policy. The application process involves proof of marriage or dependency (IRS standards). In addition, the applicant must present the valid cardholders BSU ID and their own form of picture ID to apply. Dependents 14 years of age and older will receive their own Rec Card, while those under 14 will be listed on their guardian's ID. Existing Rec Cardholders must verify their status annually as a spouse or dependent by visiting or calling the Office of Recreation Services.
Guest Passes: An individual (18 years of age or older) with a valid BSU ID or Rec Card may sponsor up to two guests per day. Guest passes are sold through the Irving Gym and Ball Gym Equipment Rooms at a cost of $4 per person. Guests are required to leave a picture ID at the point of purchase and must accompany their sponsor at all times during their stay. All guests under the age of 18 may only be sponsored by an immediate (mother, father, sister, brother) family member and are not allowed access to the fitness rooms in Ball or Irving Gym. The guest pass does not enable the holder to check out recreation equipment or to participate in formal or structured recreation programs.
