The Ball State University Libraries provides services that support students' pursuits for academic success and faculty endeavors for knowledge creation and classroom instruction. The University Libraries, housed in the Alexander M. Bracken Library, the Architecture Building, and Cooper Science Building, offer convenient access to more than 1.5 million books, periodicals, microforms, software, government publications, maps, GIS datasets, manuscripts, music scores, archival records, private papers, digital academic electronic databases, electronic collections, and video/DVDs. Persons may also borrow laptops and other technology for short-term loan. The libraries offer G-level wireless connectivity throughout. CardCat, the Ball State University Libraries' online catalog, can be accessed through the Libraries' home page (www.bsu.edu/library). The Webpage also provides access to e-journals, indexes to journal articles, links to Internet search tools, and library information. Assistance finding and using these resources is available at the Reference Desk, Bracken Library, First Floor West, (765) 285-1101.
Circulation locations for material checkout and return are Bracken Library's Main Circulation Counter, the Periodical/Reserve Counter, and the circulation sites of collections and branches. Material may also be returned through the 24-hour outside book chute west of each entrance to Bracken Library.
Bracken Library provides a comfortable environment of facilities and technology for integrating library and computer applications services. These support study and collaboration, access to computers, help from librarians, group study rooms and private study carrels, laptops for short loan periods, and print and digital collections for research and learning. There are over 250 public PC workstations and 18 iMAC stations. These are equipped with the common software used on campus by students, faculty, and staff.
Due dates of checked out material can be monitored and a one-time online renewal can be made under "My Library Account" in CardCat.
Items found in CardCat that are checked out to another user may be requested by clicking on the "Recall/Hold Request link."
Government Publications is a collection of Federal and Indiana state government publications.
Periodical/Reserve has current issues of magazines, journals, newspapers, and material placed on reserve by faculty. Online reserves are also possible and encouraged to provide students with 24/7/365 access.
Microforms include material on microfilm, microfiche, microcard, and the reader/printers to view the resources.
Interlibrary Loan Services obtains materials not held at BSU Libraries, often at no charge.
Instructional Services provides class and group instruction on library and Internet resources using state-of-the art electronic classrooms. Faculty and librarian collaborative efforts are welcomed.
Educational Resources Collections houses a circulating collection of videos, media, textbooks, and juvenile books. Videos and films may be booked for classroom presentations using an online Booking Request Form available under User Services in CardCat.
The Archives and Special Collections includes rare books, manuscripts, the University Archives, Delaware County material, and documents on Muncie as Middletown, USA.
The Geospatial Resources and Map Colllection features access to computers for GIS resources; the unit is also a depository of cartographic material from the U.S. Government and Indiana state agencies.
The Music Collection includes music scores, books, CDs, and the Music Listening Center, a listening laboratory for music theory, history, and appreciation courses.
The Architecture Library contains material relating to the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, and historic preservation. The Visual Resources Collection houses over 100,000 slides including images related to those areas.
The Science‑Health Science Library is a selective collection of reference books, journals, and monographs in the science fields represented in Ball State's curriculum.
Technology Training Support Services offers faculty and staff training for more than 80 technology topics, assistance in the classroom to teach technology for students, 1-on-1 training for faculty and staff.
