Each year between 4,000 and 5,000 students use the Learning Center's Services. A solid indicator of tutors' success with students is reflected in the grades clients earn in their courses. Past statistics reveal that 85% of students receiving tutoring earn passing grades and two-thirds earn grades of "C" or higher.
The Learning Center's professional staff encourages group learning through the Supplemental Instruction (SI) program. In courses selected for SI, trained, advanced undergraduate or graduate students serve as "model students" who attend class sessions, take notes, and hold voluntary small-group study sessions outside of class using collaborative learning to develop study strategies, promote group discussion, and assist students in questioning and review techniques. Students who attend SI sessions typically earn one half to a whole letter grade higher than students who do not attend the study sessions. If you are interested in participating in the SI program, contact Jennifer Haley at 285-1008.
In addition to peer tutoring and Supplemental Instruction, the Learning Center also serves faculty members through outreach services. Learning Center faculty coordinators encourage you to request programs of special benefit to your classes, programs including in-class workshops on study skills, time management, content-based writing assignments, and essay exam preparation. You may also request a tutor to serve as a resource person in your classroom for help with a particular assignment. If disabled students are enrolled in your courses, you may wish to make arrangements in the Learning Center for testing accommodations for those students by contacting Jackie Harris. Finally, if you would like your classes to become more familiar with Learning Center services, a staff member will visit your classroom and give a brief explanation of how the Center can help your students become more effective learners. For additional information about Learning Center services or to refer students who need help in your classes, contact the appropriate Learning Center coordinator.
