Introduction: The Counseling Center at Ball State University is recognized as one of the best in the country. It is known nationally for the high quality of counseling and testing services and for its special strengths in the areas of prevention and training. The mission of the center is to assist students to successfully reach their educational goals through a wide range of services, including individual and group personal/social counseling; career counseling; outreach/consultation; emergency services; health education; and testing. The staff want to serve and collaborate with faculty and encourage them to utilize the services in relation to students, colleagues, their classes and/or themselves. The information presented is intended to serve as an introduction and an overview. We hope you will read it, as well as get to know us better and in more detail in the months and years to come, and to be aware that we can help with a wide range of issues, from adjustment difficulties to severe dysfunction and hospitalization.
Staff: The Center's staff includes licensed, Ph.D.-level psychologists, doctoral interns in the A.P.A.-accredited training program and a psychiatrist. Staff have special expertise in many areas, including eating disorders, drug-alcohol abuse, depression and anxiety, relationships, stress management, career/vocational development and testing.
Location and Hours: Offices and services are located on the third floor of Lucina Hall and the Health Education office is located in the Wood Health Center. The reception area is opposite the elevator (Lucina room 320). Service hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. A psychologist is always on call in the evening and on weekends when classes are in session. During the day, call (765) 285-l736 and for emergency service after hours, call (765) 747-7330.
Special Services to Faculty: Faculty are eligible for all Center services free of charge, except individual therapy. Individual therapy is available through our evening clinic and is billable to health insurance. Please think of our staff as consultants in psychological matters, just as you think of your attorney in legal matters. Other services to faculty that are offered free of charge include emergency services, intake and referral, resource library materials, and classroom presentations.
Service Eligibility and Confidentiality: Students who are enrolled at least half time are eligible for all services free of charge, and students who are enrolled less than half-time are eligible for all services except individual therapy. All services are strictly confidential, and the only exceptions are those required by law.
