Dance Auditions
Ball State University's dance major admits only a limited number of new students (approximately 15 to 18) each year. Admission is by an on-campus audition or, in certain circumstances, a video audition. The audition is also used for placement in dance technique classes. The audition will last two to three hours. Prospective students must follow the audition guidelines below.

1. We need to see and assess your "dancing" body. Wear a leotard and tights (tights that can make the transition from ballet to modern). Please, no baggy T-shirts or sweats. Bring all your dance shoes (jazz shoes, ballet slippers, pointe shoes, and tap shoes) to the audition.

2. Hair should be neat and pulled back off the neck. No jewelry should be worn in class, and of course, no chewing gum.

3. You will be provided with a number. Wear it where it is visible to the auditioning faculty and students.

4. Be prepared to participate in a two-hour technique class. The class includes a ballet barre and center work, plus combinations in jazz, modern dance, and tap. Pointe work will be included if you are proficient.

5. The audition allows the faculty to observe your technical ability, performance quality, potential, and adaptability to the change in dance styles. Please do not worry if you are weak in some of the areas of style. We will be looking at you from an overall viewpoint, which includes your ability and quickness to assimilate the given material.

6. Feel free to talk to us after the audition is over. We will be glad to try to answer your questions.

7. We will be wishing you the greatest possible success, and we do understand the nervousness you will feel during such an audition.

8. Students submitting a video audition for the dance program must follow the guidelines for a dance video audition.
