Almost ten percent of American adults have significant hearing loss. Media productions with captioning allow people with hearing impairments and deafness to receive vital information by showing spoken dialogue as text in the viewing area, helping to ensure that content reaches as many viewers as possible. Captioning also helps to ensure that videotapes, films, broadcast programming, and other media meet federal disability law requirements, including the obligations of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Ball State UniversityTeleplex provides captioning as an additional post-production service for educational, promotional, and occasionally entrepreneurial projects. Captioning is provided for classroom usage at no charge. Captioning for faculty and staff promotional media projects require payment for the cost of materials and processing fees to complete the project.

Currently, the University Teleplex provides captioning for analog and serial digital video formats, video-on-demand webcasting, and DVD. For more information about the kinds of projects that require this important accommodation, please view the BSU Captioning Policy
