Teachers College
Transition to Teaching Program in Secondary Education
The Transition to Teaching (TTT) Program in Secondary Education in the Department of Educational Studies at Ball State University is designed for highly qualified individuals with undergraduate degrees and work experience in specific content areas.  Individuals who are motivated to teach at the secondary level (Grades 6-12) may obtain licensure in the following content areas: Business Education, Family and Consumer Sciences, Health, Journalism, Language Arts, Mathematics, Modern languages, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, Technology, Theatre Arts, or Visual Art.

The secondary TTT Program consists of 18 credit hours during three modules of professional education courses.  It includes guided field experiences, distance and on-campus coursework, and an intensive clinical experience of 16 weeks.  Successful completion of each module is required before beginning the next module.  Upon completion of the program, you will have prepared a professional portfolio and be ready to apply for licensure in the state of Indiana.

Guided by university faculty and mentor teachers, you develop teaching skills and techniques through extensive reading in core classes, participating in field experiences, observing in classrooms, and creating and implementing lesson plans. Observing experienced teachers interacting with students in their classrooms, participating in professional seminars and workshops, examining current educational issues, and developing curriculum will prepare you for a future in the classroom.  You will learn to

  • create a classroom environment that fosters student growth,
  • design instruction that aligns with Indiana standards,
  • adapt classroom instruction to the needs of students, and
  • understand theories of assessment.

Courses in TTT are offered at the graduate level.  Candidates enrolled in this program must be accepted by the Ball State University Graduate School (for more information go to www.bsu.edu/gradschool).  Although it is not mandatory, candidates are encouraged to continue to pursue a master's degree in secondary education.  Many of the courses offered to fulfill the requirements of this program are applicable to a master's degree.

Module I
The program begins with the summer semester on the Ball State campus.  Typically, candidates take Advanced Educational Psychology (EDPSY600) and a content area methods course.   The psychology class is currently offered during the second summer session.

Module II
Fall semester includes seminars and participation in schools along with coursework.

Module III
During the spring semester, candidates complete an intensive student teaching experience.  Coursework for this semester includes the Social, Historical, and Philosophical Foundations of Education (EDFON 620).  Seminars and content area specific courses may be required as needed.
