The Indiana Reading Corps is an AmeriCorps (http://www.americorps.org/) program of Indiana Campus Compact (http://www.iupui.edu/~icc/). It was created in response to President Clinton's America Reads Challenge. The AmeriCorps members are placed at churches, domestic violence shelters, universities, and elementary schools and serve as coordinators for Reading Coaches tutoring programs. BallStatehas the largest IRC program with 13 total AmeriCorps members. There are two full-time AmeriCorps positions currently held by Annette Cote and Marissa Nowak. Full time members serve a minimum of 1700 hours over one year. There are 11 Part-time AmeriCorps volunteer positions at BallStatethat will receive an education award at the completion of 300 hours of service.
The Reading Coaches model is a one-on-one tutoring model designed for children in grades 1-5. Reading Coaches work with their children one-on-one, focusing on word recognition, comprehension and writing. Currently, the Indiana Reading Corps at Ball State has over 14 tutoring sites, servicing over 150 children. The Indiana Reading Corps. works with great community after-school programs including Motivate Our Minds (MOM) and Community Alliance to Promote Education (CAPE), as well as additional tutoring at local elementary schools in the Muncie/Delaware County area.
Activities put on by the Ball State Indiana Reading Corps are:
- Fall Literacy Fair with crafts, story telling and other activities for children of all ages.
- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day activities to educate children on the important message of Dr. King.
- Spring Literacy Fair, usually a Dr. Seuss theme to celebrate the wonderful children's author.
In addition to the activities listed above, the AmeriCorps members participate in various community service projects in and around Muncie.
