Service Opportunities within the United States

AmeriCorps
AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs that engage more than 50,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. AmeriCorps members serve through more than 2,100 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based organizations. They tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs, and help communities respond to disasters.

AmeriCorps Vista
VISTA is about finding long-term solutions to the problems of poverty by increasing the capability of low-income people to improve the conditions of their lives. This focus on empowerment and poverty is VISTA's unique niche in the service field, and defines the role of the Volunteer. Therefore, the focus of VISTA Volunteer activity is not to provide direct service such as one-one tutoring or counseling. Rather, VISTAs are community organizers. VISTA Volunteers try to engage all elements of the community, enabling the community to solve its own problems. Examples of activities include recruiting and training community volunteers, creative fundraising and grant-writing, public awareness work, creating resource centers, or assisting a sponsor to develop a new program.
