Summer Workshops
Chemistry - Summer 2008
CHEM 690
Designing Guided Inquiry Lab Experiences for
High School Chemistry Students
3 credit hours
July 14-18, 2008 (last week of 2nd summer session)
9:00-5:00 daily (with a break for lunch everyday)

Scope:
In this workshop, participants will enhance their abilities to aid students' understanding of concepts from lecture material with laboratory experiences intended for students taking introductory (general) chemistry at the high school level.  Although different designs will be introduced, the guided inquiry model will be the focus of this workshop.  Cost, safety, waste disposal, and state standards are some of the issues that will be addressed.  Participants will work in small groups to design, test, and write an entire laboratory experiment (which includes background, procedure, questions, etc.), as well as the instructor tip sheet (which includes background information, safety concerns, waste disposal instructions, etc.).  All participants will receive a completed laboratory manual consisting of the designed and tested experiments and the instructor sheets.
