Vocational Preparation and Habilitation for the Handicapped

June 23-July 3, 1:00-5:00 p.m.

Scope:  The focus of this two-week workshop will be on current issues related to the vocational/transitional needs of exceptional children.   Students will examine career education models and assessment approaches as they contribute to the vocational readiness of the student.  Focus on program implementation and professional roles that will maximize transition of individuals with special needs from educational to vocational settings will also be explored.  Student projects will include quizzes, class presentations, and the design of an action plan based upon course readings and professional experiences.

Second Summer Session 2008.  This 3-credit course is designed to provide special educators and related service providers with an understanding of methods for evaluating and providing intervention for school-aged students with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) needs (e.g., those with autism, severe cognitive impairment, cerebral palsy).  This course will address not only AAC assessment of students functioning at various cognitive and language levels, but will also provide strategies used to facilitate the communicative competence of students with little or no functional speech.  The main focus of this course will be to improve the participation of students with AAC needs whether in self-contained or inclusive educational settings.

InserviceWorkshop: Literacy Assessment & Intervention for Students with Severe and Multiple Disabilities

Second Summer 2008.  This 3-credit course is designed to provide special educators and related service providers with an understanding of the role of literacy in the lives of students with severe and multiple disabilities (e.g., autism, moderate cognitive impairment, cerebral palsy).  The course will provide an overview of literacy acquisition among typically developing children, focusing on the National Reading Panel's (2000) five key components of reading:  phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.  The barriers to literacy acquisition for students with severe and multiple disabilities will be described.  Specific strategies for assessment of literacy skills will be addressed, with emphasis on adaptations for students with severe physical and/or severe speech impairments.  Intervention strategies for increasing access to literacy instruction in the general education curriculum will be provided as well as strategies for embedding literacy instruction in a functional or life skills curriculum.
