Multicultural and Multiethnic Education in American Schools

Scope:
Analyzes cultural and ethnic influences on the total operation of American
schools. Emphasizes learning and classroom environment and planning,
including cultural and ethnic considerations. Teacher attitudes,
administrative concerns, student perceptions, and behaviors of all school-
related personnel are studied in terms of the effect of prejudicial
attitudes on the learning environment.

AP BIOLOGY (BEGINNERS)

Scope:
This workshop is designed for teachers who have less than two years experience in AP Biology. Topics include student selection, course syllabi, textbooks, supplies, test preparation, course audit, and the 12 recommended labs. The AP Biology course redesign will be discussed. Alternate methods for the 12 labs will be presented for differing levels of technology and products from different vendors.

AP BIOLOGY (ADVANCED)

Scope:
This workshop is designed for teachers with more than two years experience in AP Biology. Topics include additional labs and activities, fine tuning the recommended labs, the AP course audit, and improving test results. The most recent exam standards will be available for discussion and practice grading sessions. The AP Biology course redesign will be presented and discussed. Alternate methods for the 12 labs will be presented for differing levels of technology and products from different vendors.

AP CHEMISTRY

Scope: This workshop will examine chemical reactions, atomic structure and periodicity, bonding theory, phases, and properties. There will be an emphasis on problem solving questions and a thorough analysis of the AP Chemistry requirements and exam format. Laboratory experiments will be conducted daily. Interfacing will be utilized when appropriate and computer analyses of laboratory data will be stressed. Grading protocol for student lab reports will be shared.

Scope: This workshop will examine acids and bases, equilibrium, kinetics, thermodynamics, and electro-chemistry.  There will be an emphasis on problem-solving questions and a thorough analysis of the AP requirements and exam format. Experiments will be conducted daily. Computer interfacing and analyses will be used when appropriate.

AP HUMAN GEOGRAPHY

Scope:
This workshop is designed to assist teachers in introducing the study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alteration of the Earth's surface. Strategies will be shared to encourage students to employ spatial concepts and landscape analysis to examine social organization and environmental consequences, and learn about the methods and tools used in the science of geography. Participants will also become familiar with the scoring of the AP Human Geography exam essay questions.

The session is tailored to meet the individualized curriculum needs of workshop participants and to develop successful teaching models for AP Micro- and/or AP Macroeconomics courses.

AP ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Scope:
This workshop will help teachers design a course in which students read critically and write effectively.  Participants will analyze past AP exams to understand what skills and knowledge their students will need. They will read and discuss both fiction and nonfiction, focusing on the authors' rhetorical strategies. Style, argumentation, and the new synthesis question will be addressed. Participants will discuss resources, longer projects, and daily activities to effectively prepare students for the test, and will also become familiar with the scoring of the AP exam's essay questions.

AP ENGLISH LITERATURE

Scope:
This workshop will help teachers design a course to teach critical reading and effective writing skills. Participants will analyze past AP exams to understand what knowledge and skills their students will need to develop. They will discuss works of poetry, prose, and drama that represent ancient and modern literature, and will become familiar with the scoring system of the exam's essay questions. Each participant will present a lesson to the group at some point during the week.

This workshop will include a review of instructional strategies, including effective lectures, critical reading, note taking, research writing, problem-based learning, group work, and writing skills. The instructor will also present the most effective ways to employ texts, visual and Internet resources, and assessment techniques. This course is for all teachers of European history.

This workshop has been designed to help create or augment an AP course. Participants will review model syllabi, examine the exam and test-taking strategies, discuss course materials and classroom activities that enhance the curriculum and improve performance, and gain experience in evaluating speaking writing samples using official AP materials and rubrics.
