Mathematics Enrichment Program
Summer 2: Thurs. June 21-Thurs. July 19, 2007

Each summer the Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a Summer Math Program to children who will enter grades 1-6 in the fall.  Math classes are held on campus, last for two hours, and take place one afternoon each week.  The classes focus on enrichment and confidence-building activities, not on remediation activities.  There is no charge for the program.  However a commitment from parents to be sure their children attend all five classes during the session in which they enroll is expected.  A downloadable enrollment form is available by visiting the Department website www.bsu.edu/math/mathed/summerprog.htm

Big M Program
June 17-21, 2007
June 24-28, 2007

The Ball State Institute for the Gifted in Mathematics (Big M) program is a five-day residential experience for gifted 5th and 6th grade elementary children.  The program is designed to provide mathematics enrichment activities not normally found in the regular classroom and to expose gifted students to math-related activities.  The focus of the program is mathematical problem solving.  Although there will be daily recreational activities, this is an academic experience.

Selection for the program requires an application.  Principals are mailed the application materials in November, teachers recommend students and parents complete an intent form in December, selection takes place in February, and the program is held in June.  Contact Dr. Rebecca Pierce at rpierce@bsu.edu for further information.

State Math Contest
April 21, 2007

One of sixteen university/college sites, each April, Ball State University and, in particular, the Department of Mathematical Sciences, locally sponsors and administers the annual, state-wide Indiana Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) math contest to middle and high school students.   The 90-minute exam features competition in four categories of mathematics.  Pre-Algebra, Algebra/Integrated Math I, Geometry/Integrated Math II, Algebra II/Integrated Math III, and Comprehensive.

Contestants who distinguish themselves on the exam and are designated as Outstanding Scholars or Scholars are recognized by the ICTM and their respective schools with a certificate and medal.  Additionally, Outstanding Scholars and their teachers are invited to a recognition ceremony at the Indiana State House in June.
