Step-by-Step Guide to the Application Process

Found the program that's right for you? Ready to pack your bags? First you need to meet with a study abroad advisor regarding the application process. Here is what to expect:

Step One: Determining Eligibility

Your advisor will help you to determine if you meet the admission requirements for your program of choice. Things to consider:

  • Does the program require a certain GPA?
  • Do you meet language proficiency requirements?
  • What class standing is recommended?
  • Is there a separate interview process?
  • Is the program restricted to certain majors/minors?
  • Have you allowed enough time to meet application deadlines?

Step Two: Gathering your Application Materials

Every program has a different application procedure. Your study abroad advisor will provide you with the proper forms and take the time to explain everything. The following are some common items that may be required during the application process:

  • Admissions application
  • Original copies of university transcripts
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Essays (sometimes required in both English and your language of study)
  • Housing applications, host family requests, etc.
  • Passport sized photos
  • A copy of your passport
  • Application fees

Step Three: Submitting the Application

Once you have completed all of your forms and gathered the right materials you will need to turn them in to the Center for International Programs.

**Remember: Only complete files will be reviewed for admission. **

Your advisor will make copies of the documents for your file and send the original application off to the appropriate location. If an interview is required you will be notified at this time. For some programs it can take a month or more to hear back about a placement, so don't worry if you don't hear back right away.
