London Centre (LC) was started in 1972 by a group of English and History professors from Ball State who had professional experiences in London and wanted to share them with students. They also wanted Ball State students to have the opportunity to live/reside in London for a semester and take a full load of courses at the same time.
The administration of Ball State at that time was persuaded by this group and supported its inception. Since that time, LC has provided opportunities for life-changing experiences in terms of new knowledge, new perspectives, personal growth and valuable friendships and memories.
The very first group of 40 students participated in LC program arrived in London in the fall of 1972. At that time, Ball State was in a quarter-system that included fall, winter and spring term. Upon these students returned, their enthusiasm for the program prompted other students to go and 40 more went in the winter and spring respectively. This same enthusiasm has never faded and the program routinely recruits 40-45 students every semester. Today, the program fills up on the first day that deposits can be accepted. London Centre currently has over 3,000 alumni.
