Health Center, Ball State University
Fees
In order to meet many health care needs, Ball State provides a clinic conveniently located on campus. Available services include a medical clinic, women's health center, physical therapy, health education and psychological care. The Health Center Fee pays for these services. Students taking 7 credit hours or more are required to pay the Health Center Fee, which is currently $79 each for spring and fall semesters and $42 for summer session.  Part time students may choose to pay for these services at the same cost as a full time student, however the fee must be paid before the drop and add deadline of each semester.   The $42 fee for summer session covers all summer sessions, and when determining whether the fee is charged, the total number of hours for all summer sessions is used.  Students have until the end of the drop/add period for the second session to elect to pay the fee if they are taking less than 7 credit hours.

The fee provides for clinical staff services at the Health Center. Pharmaceutical preparations, X-rays, labs, some physical therapy treatments, vaccines and services obtained outside the Health Center are not covered by the Health Center Fee.

A student who is enrolled in classes but has not paid the Health Center Fee may be seen in the Health Center, but will be assessed a fee for service. Fee for service charges may be paid by charging to your bursar account as well as cash or credit card.

A student may see a doctor or nurse practitioner on a walk-in basis without an appointment. The Health Center Fee covers the professional services, however the student is financially responsible for any medications, labs, and x-ray costs. This makes it important that you are aware of the details of your medical insurance.  Many medical plans demand that you see your primary health care provider first before they will cover the cost. Your primary health care provider is a doctor who is assigned to you by some insurance plans to determine when or if you should have medical care. You need to make your health care provider aware of this to help keep your health care costs down. For instance, if a bone fracture is suspected, your insurance may not cover the cost of the x-ray if a campus health care provider orders the test.  In those circumstances we may be able to contact your primary care physician or insurance plan to find out if there is a particular way they want it ordered in order for them to pay for it.

If your insurance provider is an HMO or lists a medical provider on your card, it probably will not cover the costs discussed above unless arrangements are made at the time of service. The best way to determine your coverage is to call the 1-800 number located on your insurance card.

Please bring your health insurance card with you if you need to visit the health center. Being aware of your medical coverage before you come to Ball State could save you a great deal of time and expense later. We need your help to meet your health care needs at the lowest possible cost.

Thank You,

The Health Center Staff
