Peer Health Education
Health Education offers a peer health educator program that focuses on healthy lifestyle management for college students.  This is a "student-educating-students" program that relates to areas of alcohol, drugs, smoking prevention and cessation, nutrition, sexual health, stress management and other topics related to health and wellness. The methods of presentation are interactive.

Peer health educators gain valuable experience by designing, coordinating and conducting a variety of health education programs for other university students.  Students from any department are welcome to participate in the program.


PEER HEALTH EDUCATOR PROGRAMS INCLUDE:

A training course is taught by the Health Education personnel and requires approximately 2 hours to complete. Training covers topics such as interpersonal issues, sexuality and confidentiality, and specific skills training in areas of public speaking and group facilitation.


HEALTH EDUCATION OUTREACH PROGRAMS:

"SMOKE FREE ME" - This workshop focuses on the dangers of smoke and smokeless tobacco addiction.  Students learn techniques to negotiate how to not use tobacco and are given information regarding how to stop, what quitting cold turkey can mean, and the tips for life after cigarettes.

"SAVING YOUR SKIN" - Skin preservation techniques are given, including information on tanning booths and sunscreen.  Students are given alternative tanning information and general hygiene regarding skin care.
   

" SEXUAL HEALTH" - This is an interactive program that covers the topics of sexually transmitted diseases, abstinence, condoms, negotiating safer sex and making sex pleasurable.  This program is non-threatening and humorous.

"WOMEN'S HEALTH" - The goal of women's health is to encourage women to become knowledgeable about their bodies and to provide information to help them be responsible and healthy in their lives.  The program covers PAP smear, breast self-examination, contraceptives, sexually transmitted diseases, PMS, painful menstruation, and bladder infections.  The atmosphere is informal and open.

"MEN'S HEALTH" - The goal of men's health is to provide men with information that will help them to be responsible and healthy in their lives.  The program covers topics of testicular self-examination, condoms, lubricants, contraceptives, and sexually transmitted diseases.  The atmosphere is informal, fun and interactive.

"HIV/AIDS AWARENESS" - This program explains the basics of HIV/AIDS: such as history, routes of transmission, symptoms, diseases associated with HIV/AIDS, testing and safer sex.

"ALCOHOL/MARIJUANA AND THE LAW" - This presentation focuses on clarifying the Indiana alcohol/marijuana laws and how these laws apply to BSU students; the long-term implications of criminal records and how they can effect personal and career goals; and the cost and time involved with legal encounters.

"SUBSTANCE USE AND ITS EFFECT UPON SEXUAL HEALTH" - In this program students are given the opportunity to hear how alcohol/marijuana can effect responsible sexual decision-making, recognize the substance use increases the likelihood of acquaintance rape, unplanned pregnancy and STDs.  Students can acquire skills to include personal strategies and environmental strategies to prevent risky sexual behaviors.

"DON'T LEAVE DICK FOR DEAD" - This program focuses on what a student should know about helping a friend who is experiencing alcohol/marijuana/other drug problems or overdose.
