Counseling Center, Concerned Charlie
Current Response - 4/4/2008 #1 - i THINK i want to get help from the counseling center, but i'm not sure who would be the best person to talk to.
Dear Charlie:

i THINK i want to get help from the counseling center, but i'm not sure who would be the best person to talk to. I'm almost positive i have some sort of depression, and i really think it's time i open up and talk to someone. I know i definitely want to talk to a woman, but could you tell me a little bit about each counselor so that i know who to ask for? Like...maybe what they specialize in, or something like that.

Signed: not sure

Dear not sure:

Charlie hears that you feel you are suffering from depression.  You also express a readiness to begin getting some help.  Charlie is pleased to hear that you are wanting to take this next step which, for many, is the most difficult one.

To make your first appointment, Charlie suggests that you either call reception (285-1736) or stop in at the Counseling Center (3rd floor, Lucina).   You indicate that you would like to talk to a female and that can be arranged. You will simply need to make this known when you request your first appointment.

You also ask for information about each counselor.  Charlie hears that you are wanting to find someone who will be a good fit for your personality and your issues, which is a very good idea. Charlie suggests that when you come in for your intake you talk with your intake counselor about the qualities you are looking for in a counselor or the areas of specialization that you hope your counselor will have. After hearing a more detailed description of your presenting concerns, your counselor will be in a better position to recommend a counselor who might be, as you say, "the best person to talk to".  You can also pull up the Counseling Center website  (http://www.bsu.edu/counselingcenter/) and click on "staff directory" for a brief description of the permanent staff-- but all of the counselors are not listed on line.

To getting the help you need,

Charlie
