What is Federal Work-Study?
Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a type of financial aid awarded by the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid at Ball State University. Students are awarded FWS based on financial need.
How do I get a campus job?
Visit the Career Center in Lucina Hall 220 to apply for jobs. This office coordinates all student employment. If your financial aid award includes FWS, you can apply for any campus job. Campus jobs include Ball State positions and certain community service positions with local nonprofit organizations and public agencies. If you were not awarded FWS, you may apply for any campus job except those advertised for FWS applicants only.
Am I eligible for FWS?
To find out if you are eligible for FWS, visit the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid in Lucina Hall 245 or call 765-285-5600.
What are the advantages of qualifying for FWS?
- Employers seek FWS students because the cost to their student employment budget is less than for a regular employee (although the employee's earnings are the same as those of regular employees).
- FWS earnings are not included in income when applying for aid for the next academic year, making you more likely to be eligible for aid.
- Some local nonprofit organizations and public agencies hire FWS students to work in paid community service positions.
How do I receive money through the FWS program?
Once you get a campus job, the university will issue you a biweekly paycheck based on the number of hours you work. Federal and state taxes will be deducted from your check. FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax will not be withheld while you are attending classes; it may be withheld if you work during breaks and summer.
