Supervisors wanting to change student wage rates should follow policies established by their vice-presidents and observe the following procedures.
To Change Base Rates of Pay
Step 1. To increase the base rate of pay for existing positions above $5.85 an hour, complete a "Student Employment Change in Base Rate Request" form. Wage rates above the $5.85 an hour campus minimum must be approved by the appropriate department head, dean, and vice president. Requests for higher wage rates for positions in Academic Affairs and Student Affairs must be accompanied by a statement of justification and job description. This paper form is available as an Adobe Acrobat document on the Career Center's Web site at www.bsu.edu/careers/forms.
You may make changes in base rates of pay at any time during the year.
Step 2. Supervisors are responsible for submitting "Base Wage Rate Increase" Student Employment Authorization forms for each student incumbent in a position for whom a change in base rate applies. This electronic form is in FormBlaster. Do not submit FormBlaster forms for individual students until you receive confirmation from the Career Center that the position's base wage rate has been changed on the Cardinal ViewJobs system.
The new base rate for individual students becomes effective with the date listed on the confirmation you receive after submitting the FormBlaster request. This date corresponds to the start of the next pay period. If you want to submit both a base rate change and a longevity increase, do not submit the longevity request until after the effective date for the base rate change.
Step 3. To post a new or vacant student position at a wage rate above $5.85 an hour, submit the Career Center's "Student Employment Vacancy Form" with the signatures of the appropriate vice-president and the department head (or person with budget sign-off authority) approving the higher rate of pay. This paper form is available as an Adobe Acrobat document on the Career Center's web site at www.bsu.edu/careers/forms.
To Award Longevity Pay
Longevity increase requests may be submitted at any time during a semester, but do not become effective until the next full pay period of the following term. To award longevity increases to returning student employees, submit the "Longevity Pay Increase" Student Employment Authorization form for each student eligible for longevity pay at the end of the current semester. This electronic form is in FormBlaster. The department head must also approve the change in rate. Longevity increase requests must be submitted by the last day of the current semester to become effective with the following term.
Please remember that the Board of Trustees set $7.50 an hour as the maximum hourly pay rate for regular student employment positions, including all longevity increases.
The complete student wage plan, "Suggested Guidelines for Establishing Differentiated Student Employee Wage Rates within Ball State University Departments" is available as an Adobe Acrobat document on the Career Center's web site at www.bsu.edu/careers/publications. The plan includes a description of three student employment wage levels, a suggested job-review process, and guidelines for writing job descriptions and making longevity pay raise decisions.
Beginning July 13, 2008, the minimum wage rate will increase to $6.55, at which time the starting wage for all jobs paying below the minimum wage will be reviewed at the time of posting and increased to the new minimum. Student employees earning below the minimum will automatically be increased to $6.55 an hour. Previous longevity increases will not be considered when the minimum wage change takes effect.
