Students from architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture, finance, and marketing are working together to create a cohesive and unique vision for the areas and neighborhoods surrounding Ball State University. This vision will evaluate the extent to which the neighborhoods provide an environment that is fully capable of supporting all needs and desires among the campus and city communities, thus developing a new vision of sustainable future development that will enhance current conditions. Action
The students developed zoning regulations and design guidelines after researching the neighborhoods around Ball State University. Architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning students developed a master plan and three-dimensional model that paralleled the established design guidelines and concepts, directly focusing on the New Village and a residential and commercial corridor extending south of the New Village. Finance students analyzed costs of construction and its potential value over time to determine its financial feasibility, while marketing students surveyed university students and employees to verify if a desire and need were expressed for this concept.
Results
The team designed a sustainable and walkable community in close proximity to the university that will consist of residential, commercial, office, and green spaces that give vitality and identity to Ball State University and the city of Muncie through its architectural character and destination activities. This project seeks to create an improved quality of life for students, faculty, and retirees and to provide a positive and memorable experience for visitors at Ball State.
