Spring 2008 Semester Permissions Begin: October 9th
Summer 2008 Session/Semester Permissions Begin: February 5th
Fall, 2008 Semester Permissions Begin: March 18th
Once you obtain permissions for social work courses, the Department enters your name in the online registration system. You now will be able to request those social work courses for which you received permission.
Do I have to get permissions for non social work courses?
With few exceptions, you will not need to obtain permission for other courses on campus. You can just request these courses online. Request dates are listed below.
Why does the social work department require permissions?
We use the permissions system to ensure that you are taking social work courses sequentially as required, and to ensure your timely completion of the BSW degree. The permission system also allows us to manage course enrollments.
Will I ever not be able to get into a social work course that I need?
You should not have to worry about social work classes filling up and closing. On occasion, if you seek permission to register very late, you might find that a particular section of a social work course is full. Another section, however, in almost all cases will still have room for you.
Am I registered once I get permission for social work classes?
No. Getting permission is only the first step. The next step is to request the courses you want online including non social work courses, and then to confirm your registration once your requests have been approved by the university. You may find that a non social work course you have requested is full and you cannot register for it. If this is the case, you can add another course through the online registration system. You can also drop a course, if you decide not to take a course you requested. You decrease the likelihood of not getting into a non- social work course you want if you request your courses early.
To summarize registering for courses involves either a 2 or 3 (for social work courses) step process:
Step One: Get permissions for social work classes
Step Two: Request through the online system all courses you want to take
Step Three: Register for those courses that you have requested that have been confirmed by the online registration system

What if I am registering past the course permissions and course requests dates?
After the permission and course request dates, and after course registration has begun, any Ball State student can go online and register for courses that have openings. If you want to register for a social work class, you still need to get permission in the social work department first though.
Confused? Still have a question?
Don't panic! As a transfer student, the Cooper Center advisor and the social work transfer coordinator will walk you through your first registration. Next time you register you can contact Alison Gillespie (765 -285-1016) or your social work advisor if you have a question or need help.
