Social Work Minor

Why a social work minor?

A social work minor will help you:

  • Work more effectively with social work professionals in you future career. This is particularly helpful if you know you will be working collaboratively with professional social workers.
  • Plan to earn an MSW degree after completing an undergraduate degree in another field.  The minor will give you a basic understanding of  the profession and prepare you  graduate program.

Can I practice as a "social worker" with a minor?

No. A minor in social work will not prepare you for professional social work practice. You will not be able to identify yourself professionally as a social worker. Nor would you be eligible to sit for the state licensing exam or apply for advanced standing in an MSW program.

Are the courses for the minor offered every semester?

Yes. All courses for the minor are offered both fall and spring semesters.  During the summer SOCWK100 (second summer session) and SOCWK330 (summer semester) are also offered.

How do I declare the minor?

You can declare the major by completing and submitting the Major/Minor Curricular Change Form found in any Advisement Office on campus.  These forms are also kept in the Department of Social Work and can be processed by the department as well.
