The Research and Teacher/Subject Matter Experts teams guides both game development teams to ensure that each game design is based on teacher-defined learning objective(s) and an individual misconception related to the subject matter.

Pre and post gaming evaluations measure each student's knowledge level and indicate if a student has a greater understanding of the subject matter/misconception addressed in the game.

About the BSU-led team:

Uniqueness

The team members come from very different backgrounds. This allows the brainstorming sessions to be very productive and unique since every member contributes with his/her points of view which are very different. For instance, art and music majors usually have great ideas about graphical user interface and sounds while developers focus more on game playability and required analytic skills.

Challenges

Initially, the team had very little experience on game programming and team work. Moreover, most team members were not familiar with Macromedia Flash so the use of this development tool had to be learned before proceeding with the implementation.

Opportunities for student growth

Students had the opportunity to gain real life experience in all the phases of game development, including requirements analysis, brainstorming sessions, team work, design, development, testing, etc.
