Memorial service April 28 to honor Ball State professor (4/25/2003)
MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State University will host a memorial service April 28 for a history professor who recently passed away.

Sponsored by Ball State's Department of History, the program for Lawrence J. Birken, 51, will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Forum Room in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center. It is open to the public.

Birken, an associate professor of history, died April 20 after a short illness. He joined Ball State in 1989 after teaching at Monmouth College, Rutgers University, Hamilton College, the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and New York University.

He was born in New York, N.Y., the son of Abraham H. and Millicent Miller Birken. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, a master's degree from the University of Connecticut and a Ph.D. from Rutgers University.
