Phonathon breaks $1 million level in record time (4/9/2003)
MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State University's phonathon campaign recently surpassed the $1 million level in pledges, nearly a month faster than in previous years.

Lola R. Mauer, assistant director of annual giving, said the phonathon usually reaches $1 million after the week of final examinations, which is traditionally in late April and/or early May.

She attributes the campaign's success to several factors, including raising the students' hourly pay, additional training sessions, increasing employee retention as well as providing a fun work atmosphere and better-trained supervisors.

"We have a group of students who are tremendously dedicated and hardworking," Mauer said. "I also believe we have alumni and friends who are very supportive of the university."

Since the 2002-2003 phonathon campaign began last July 1, 35 students have received more than 11,000 pledges. Gifts range from $10 to $7,000 with an average of $91.

These private gifts provide assistance to Ball State students through scholarships and financial aid, and allow the university to purchase technology and other resources for student use, Mauer said.

The phonathon is a 12-month program with students making calls to alumni and friends of the university across the country. The project features a computer-automated system in the Alumni Center.

In addition to hourly pay, students can earn gift certificates from area businesses as well as an invitation to lunch with Ball State President Blaine A. Brownell.

Students average about eight to nine minutes on each call, informing alumni about current university news and projects as well as keeping them updated on Ball State sports.

"It is very important that the alumni feel connected to the university even if they haven't been back on campus for several years," Mauer said. "The students answer questions about enrollment, tuition and the status of an alumnus' favorite building."
